Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Second Skin Aftercare Instructions
Leave your second skin on for 4 days. During this time, your tattoo will weep, and the bandage will fill with body fluids called plasma. This plasma may mix with excess pigment and create a murky-colored fluid that can cover your tattoo. This is completely normal, so don’t panic.
The bandage is breathable and water-resistant, so it’s safe to shower while wearing it.
General Care
-
Never touch your tattoo unless your hands are clean.
Germs and bacteria are everywhere, and a healing tattoo needs proper care.
Removing the Second Skin
-
When you’re ready to remove the second skin, do so in the shower.
-
Place the tattoo under lukewarm water and slowly, carefully peel the bandage away.
-
Dead skin may come off with the second skin — this is normal and nothing to worry about.
-
Do not remove the bandage dry.
Immediately wash your tattoo using:
-
Antibacterial soap (such as Dial)
-
Clean hands only
Do not use any other soaps or washes. Gently massage the tattoo to build a light lather and make sure it does not feel slimy.
⚠️ Never use a washcloth, loofah, sponge, or anything other than your hands.
After Washing
-
Rinse the tattoo thoroughly.
-
Pat dry with a clean paper towel (do not rub).
Apply a small amount of unscented lotion (brands such as Aveeno or Jergens are recommended).
🚫 Do NOT use:
Oils, anti-itch creams, healing creams, Neosporin, Aquaphor, or similar products.
The second skin eliminates the need for healing ointments.
Ongoing Care
-
Wash and moisturize twice daily until the tattoo is healed.
-
If the tattoo appears dry between washes, apply lotion as needed.
-
Do not re-wrap or re-bandage the tattoo once the second skin is removed.
Important Notes
-
If you experience a reaction to the second skin, contact your artist.
-
If the second skin comes off before 3 days and exposes the tattoo, reach out to your artist for further healing instructions.
-
Your tattoo may peel, flake, or itch. Do not scratch or pick, as this can damage the healing skin.
-
Do not use anti-itch creams.
Restrictions During Healing
-
No submerging in water:
No baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes, oceans, or any bodies of water.
Showers only. -
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds.
-
Avoid working out, gyms, or excessive sweating.
-
Wear loose, breathable clothing. Avoid clothing or bedding sticking to the tattoo.
-
Extra care is needed for tattoos in high-movement areas.
If you have any questions or concerns at any point, please contact your artist.
